ADHD Diagnosis in the UK
In the UK, you have a legal right to choose who offers your specialized NHS mental health assessments. Some healthcare professionals do not have the qualifications to recognize ADHD.
Panorama has heard from whistleblowers and patients who claim that private clinics diagnose ADHD and prescribe medications without proper checks. We conducted an undercover investigation to learn more.
What is an assessment of the project?
A psychiatrist will meet with you to discuss the impact of ADHD on your life and whether medication can assist. You'll need to provide information about your symptoms as well as any issues they are causing. You will be asked about your personal and professional life. Private psychiatric services offer the fastest and most expert diagnosis, especially in London. The cost ranges from PS600 to PS1,200. Private psychiatrists have experience of conducting assessments of adults with diverse backgrounds and can provide an individual approach, particularly in situations where you may be extremely knowledgeable or have a successful career. They can also screen and help with co-morbidities, such as depression and anxiety, that are often associated with ADHD.
The Psychiatrist assesses your symptoms using the DSM V criteria and determines whether you are in the range of an ADHD diagnosis. You will need to demonstrate at least six traits (symptoms) that are present in your life today and how they have had an impact on your previous experiences.
The Psychiatrist then informs you of your options and the next steps. You can decide to begin treatment that involves stimulants such as methylphenidate. These stimulants fall under the Misuse of Drugs Act and are therefore controlled. They are only prescribed by a doctor or psychiatrist registered with the General Medical Council.

If you're a member of the Armed Forces, you have the right to choose the mental health practitioner you're referred to for an ADHD assessment. You'll need to ensure that your GP will accept full care or a shared care agreement' once the chosen provider has discharged you and prescribes treatment (usually CBT or medication). You will be asked about your symptoms, including the time they began, if you GP refers you to an ADHD specialist through the Right to Choose path. This is to assist your doctor to understand the extent of your symptoms and how they impact your life. Answer these questions with honesty and clarity.

You'll need to provide a letter from your provider which proves this, as well as an original copy of your medical records.
